Artist's Description

I photographed a lot of mountains on a car trip from Cuenca to Guayaquil and back. It took me a few weeks to feel out how to portray the mountains I had seen. I would paint in plein aire, but it is a 4 hour drive up and down hill, with virtually no place to park. It wouldn't matter anyway. How do you paint a mountain. How do you choose which mountain. I became closer to knowing how to portray and say what I wanted to say. The split is between an illustration, or an expressive approach. In one painting I took a geometric approach. Many of the mountains have greenery all the way up to the top outcrops. Some have forests. These are not wild forests with numbers animals, similar to African animals. I'm so aware now how much South America mirrors Africa. It's obvious from the world map that the east coast of Africa is the puzzle shape to the west coast of South America. They were one continent many hundreds of thousands or millions of years ago.

After graduation, instead of taking my BA in art at Yale, (my scholarship to Cooper...
